How have College Admissions Changed with Covid?

The pandemic has caused many universities to make standardized tests optional for admission.

And as of January 2021, the College Board eliminated SAT 2s and the SAT essay.

As a result, more students are taking their chances and applying to top schools.

For example, in 2020, applications went up 42% at Harvard and 74% at Caltech.

The elimination of standardized test requirements makes admissions more challenging for applicants from competitive high schools. If student grades are not as strong, they can no longer differentiate themselves with test scores.

That also means that grades, extracurriculars, essays, teacher recommendations and AP scores will be of utmost importance in the application process.

In fact, the College Board said one reason why they eliminated SAT 2s is because of the increased prevalence of AP tests. So, be sure to take them if you can.

If you’re applying for a top school, it will always help you to have a strong standardized test score, even if schools are test optional. But don’t spend all your time studying for standardized tests.

It’s very important to use a fair amount of your time developing a passion project that will hone your skills and set you apart in the admissions process
